On July 7th, just before the start of the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., around a dozen members of the Humboldt Socialist Union marched the streets of Arcata, California protesting NATO and US imperialism. A small megaphone amplified the chant of “We support our community – not NATO,” and the group carried handmade signs with slogans like “NO $ FOR TAIWAN UKRAINE OR GENOCIDE,” “END THE U.S. EMPIRE,” “WE SUPPORT AMERICANS,” and “DISMANTLE NATO & US EMPIRE.”

While the event was small, Rainer Shea, CPI member and informal leader of the Humboldt Socialist Union, said the rally was nevertheless “absolutely energizing.” Attendees “loved the experience,” and they received cheers and positive feedback from passers-by. One local man praised the group for its pro-American slogans, which are somewhat unusual among many anti-war groups. While attendees considered the event a success, one lesson learned was to consider scheduling future events on weekdays, when more people in that area may be available to participate.

Asked about the purpose of the rally, Rainer said: “We opposed NATO on the basis of its both destroying other countries, and harming the economic interests of Americans… Our goals are to build connections with the community, spread education on the most important issues within the class struggle, and prove ourselves to be a force that can deliver material change.” The Humboldt Socialist Union is not a political party, he clarified, as its members believe a “mass organization” focusing on bringing people together to a common cause is more appropriate for the present moment.

The Center for Political Innovation encourages members to become active leaders in their local communities, just as Rainer Shea is endeavoring to do in Humboldt County.
