On its way out, the Trump administration tightened the blockade on Cuba to make it harder for the small island nation to deal with the pandemic. Today the Biden administration is continuing that tightened embargo along with most of Trump’s foreign policy. On Sunday July 11th, Cubans began to protest against these worsened conditions; some of them raising legitimate grievances. That same day U.S. media exploded promoting the protests as pro regime change demonstrations demanding the overthrow of the Communist Party. Media outlets such as CNN, FOX and others showed pictures of protests from around the world, even in Miami; claiming they were taken in Cuba. Actual photos from Cuba show protests on the island to be quite small.

On Tuesday, July 13th journalist and political analyst Caleb Maupin, co-founder of the Center for Political Innovation, confronted a small group of Cuban expats supporting the protests in Cuba on the streets of Manhattan. Maupin set out to ask them if they supported ending the economic blockade and sanctions strangling the country. Low and behold, the protestors wanted the embargo and sanctions to stay in place. They answered his question saying “the blockade is okay” and “end the sanctions? No!” Some of the protestors walked away when they realized what Maupin was asking.

If these protesters are concerned with the well-being of Cuba’s people, why would they not want to lift the crippling economic blockade that prevents food, medicine, key technology and other important products from being imported to the island?

How are these people Cuban “patriots” when they support the blockade against their own people? The protesters revealed themselves to be pro-regime change, pro-economic warfare activists, not simply Cubans expressing concern for their people. They serve the interests of the ruling elite in the United states and against the Cuban people.

Though this shouldn’t be surprising as many of these expats were part of the U.S. aligned Cuban elite that was displaced by the socialist revolution. If there’s one thing the U.S. ruling class and the exiled Cuban ruling class have in common; it is that they value their own wealth, power and prestige over the interests of the island’s population.

The supposed “concerns” about the well-being of the Cuban people expressed by US officials should be recognized as completely disingenuous. Let us recall how US officials stated their true intentions for Cuba long ago: “…every possible means should be undertaken promptly to weaken the economic life of Cuba. If such a policy is adopted, it should be the result of a positive decision which would call forth a line of action which, while as adroit and inconspicuous as possible, makes the greatest inroads in denying money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government.”
